Mariette Beco, nascida em 25 de Março de 1921. É a mais velha duma família de sete irmãos. A família é pobre e mora numa casa modesta isolada, um pouco afastada da estrada, fora da aldeia de Banneux. Em frente da casa há uma grande mata de pinheiros.

Domingo, 15 de Janeiro de 1933
Mariette, ao entardecer, está à janela de sua casa, espreitando o caminho na mira de ver aparecer o irmão Julien. São cerca das sete da tarde e faz muito frio. Subitamente apercebe-se duma silhueta feminina, luminosa, vestida de branco, com um cinto azul e estranhamente inclinada para o lado esquerdo. A Senhora aparece no jardim da casa e faz-lhe sinal para que se aproxime. Mariette chama a mãe que, ao ver a silhueta luminosa, se enche de medo porque pensa tratar-se duma bruxa. De imediato, tranca a porta e não deixa sair a filha. Não foi pronunciada nenhuma palavra.
Quarta-feira, 18 de Janeiro de 1933
Mariette está no jardim e reza de joelhos. De repente, deixa o jardim e vai para a estrada porque a Senhora a chamou. Por duas vezes cai de joelhos. Um terceira vez se ajoelha diante duma poça de água proveniente duma fonte. A Senhora fala-lhe:
Mete as mãos na água. Esta fonte está-me reservada. Boa tarde, até à próxima.
Depois de sair do êxtase, Mariette conta que a Virgem tinha um vestido branco, comprido, deixando ver apenas o pé direito ornamentado com uma rosa dourada. A cabeça estava coberta com um véu branco também. Tinha um cinto azul. Da cabeça estava rodeada de raios luminosos e trazia um terço pendurado no braço direito.
Quinta-feira, 19 de Janeiro de 1933
O tempo está muito mau. Mariette está de joelhos no caminho. A Senhora aparece. Mariette pergunta-lhe:
"Quem sois vós, linda Senhora?"
Eu sou a Virgem dos Pobres.
A Virgem conduz a menina pelo caminho até à fonte. Mariette pergunta mais uma vez:
"Dissestes-me ontem, bela Senhora: esta fonte está-me reservada. Porque me está reservada"
Mariette refere-se a si, pensando que a fonte é para ela. Com um sorriso, a Virgem responde:
Esta fonte está reservada a todas as Nações … para aliviar os doentes. Rezarei por ti. Até à próxima.
Sexta-feira, 20 de Janeiro de 1933
Mariette fica na cama todo o dia: dormiu mal. Às 18h 45m acorda, veste-se e sai. Quando aparece a Virgem, Mariette exclama:
"Ó, cá esta ela!"
Depois pergunta:
"Que desejais minha Bela Senhora?"
Sorridente, a Virgem responde:
Gostaria de uma pequena capela.
A Virgem estende as mãos e com a direita abençoa a menina.
Seguem-se três semanas de grande calma. A Virgem interrompe as suas visitas. Mariette, no entanto, permanece fiel: todos os dias às 19 h reza no jardim.
Sábado, 11 de Fevereiro de 1933
De novo Mariette é levada para a estrada. Ajoelha-se duas vezes, molha as mãos na fonte e faz o sinal da cruz. Levanta-se bruscamente, corre para casa e chora. Não compreende o que lhe diz a Virgem:
Venho aliviar o sofrimento.
Não percebe a palavra "aliviar". Mas sabe que é qualquer coisa de bom, uma vez que a Virgem sorriu.
Quarta-feira, 15 de Fevereiro de 1933
Mariette transmite à Virgem a pergunta do Padre Jamin:
"Santíssima Virgem, o Sr. Padre disse-me para lhe pedir um sinal."
A Virgem responde:
Acreditai em mim, eu acreditarei em vós.
Aqui, a Virgem confia um segredo a Mariette. A menina fica muito abalada e chora. Conta apenas que nossa Senhora lhe disse:
Rezai muito. Até à próxima.
Segunda-feira, 20 de Fevereiro de 1933
Mariette está de novo de joelhos na neve, enfrentando o frio. De repente, reza mais alto e mais depressa. Deixa o jardim, ajoelha-se duas vezes na estrada, depois junto à fonte onde reza e chora "porque Maria vai-se embora muito depressa". A Virgem sorridente como é hábito, diz-lhe:
Minha querida filha, reza muito.
Depois, deixa de sorrir e acrescenta antes de partir, e com uma voz mais grave:
Até à próxima.
Quinta-feira, 2 de Março de 1933
Mariette espera dez dias antes de voltar a ver a Virgem pela última vez. Neste dia, chove torrencialmente desde as 15 horas. Mariette sai às 19h. Está a rezar o terceiro terço quando pára subitamente de chover. Cala-se, estende os braços, levanta-se, dá um passo e ajoelha-se. Em casa, depois de muitas lágrimas porque a Virgem não irá mais aparecer, Mariette confia a mensagem que Maria lhe deu:
Sou a Mãe do Salvador, Mãe de Deus. Rezai muito.
Antes de a deixar, a Virgem impôs-lhe as mãos, dizendo:
Adeus.
Reconhecimento pela Igreja
As aparições de Banneux foram reconhecidas em 22 de Agosto de 1949, pelo bispo de Liège, D. Kerkhofs: "Acreditamos com plena consciência, poder e dever reconhecer sem reserva (...) a realidade das oito aparições da Santíssima Virgem a Mariette Beco."

Na manhã de sexta-feira, de 02/12/2011, Mariette Beco a quem apareceu a virgen Maria por 8 vezes, de 15 de janeiro á 2 de março de 1933,faleceu aos 90 anos de idade em Banneux.
Em 2008,ano oficial das cerimônias em comemoração do aniversário de número 75 das Aparições, Mariette Beco pediu ao Padre Joseph ,então reitor do Santuário,que tornasse conhecida a carta na qual, ela fazia seu ultimo testamento sobre as Aparições: " EU FUI NADA MAIS QUE UM CARTEIRO,QUE ENTREGA A CORRESPONDÊNCIA.UMA VEZ QUE ISSO FOI FEITO, O CARTEIRO NÃO É MAIS IMPORTANTE".

From the 15th of January till the 2nd of March 1933, Our Lady appeared to Mariette BECO eigth times, calling herself the VIRGIN OF THE POOR.
The so-called Little Chapel was built and inaugurated in 1933.
The Apparitions and the Message were declared authentic by Mgr. KERKHOFS, Bishop of Liège, on the 22nd of August 1949.
THE APPARITIONS IN 1933
In January 1933, Mariette Beco was eleven years old. She was born on the 25th March, 1921 and was the eldest of a family of seven children. Her family who was quite poor, lived in a simple working-class house, isolated and set back from the road, at the edge of the forest.
In the evening of Sunday January 15th, Mary appeared for the first time in the garden of the little house. The lady beckoned her. Mariette wanted to go out, but her mother stopped her and locked the door.
On Wednesday, 18th January, at 7.pm., Mariette was in the garden on her knees, and her hands joined in prayer. Suddenly she left the garden and started walking up the road where the lady was calling her. Twice she fell to her knees on the frozen ground. A third time she knelt near the ditch in front of a pool of water coming from a spring.
The lady spoke to her. "Push your hands into the water." Mariette does it. She repeated what the Lady had just said to her, "This spring is reserved for Me, Goodnight, good-bye."
On Thursday, January 19th, the weather was severe. Mariette was kneeling on the path. It was 7.pm. The Lady appeared. Mariette asked her "who are you, beautiful Lady ?" "I am the Virgin of the Poor." The Virgin then led the child to the spring. Mariette asked another question : "beautiful Lady, yesterday you said 'this spring is reserved for me' why for me ?" Mariette pointed to herself. Smiling even more, the Virgin answered "this spring is reserved for all nations... for the sick." Mariette replied "Thank you, thank you." Then the Virgin said "I will pray for you - goodbye."
On Friday, January 20th, Mariette stayed in bed all day to recover from a sleepless night. At a quarter to seven she woke up, dressed and went out. When the Virgin appeared she cried out : "Ah. There she is", then she started talking to the beautiful Lady. "What do you want, my beautiful Lady ?" The Virgin answered with a smile "I would like a small chapel." She stretched out her hands and blessed the child with her right hand.
Then there followed three weeks of total silence. The Virgin interrupted her visits. Mariette however remained faithful : each day at 7.pm. she prayed in the garden.
On Saturday, February 11th, Mariette was on the road, she knelt twice, dipped her hands into the spring and made the sign of the cross. Suddenly she stood up, ran towards the house and wept. She did not understand what the Virgin had told her. "I come to relieve suffering." She did not understand the meaning of the words "to relieve."
Three days elapsed. On Wednesday evening, 15th February, the Virgin appeared for the sixth time. Mariette passed on Father Jamin's request to the Virgin : "the chaplain asks you for a sign." The Virgin answered, "Believe in me, I will believe in you." "Pray a lot : goodbye." The Virgin confided a secret to the child.
On February 20th, Mariette knelt again in the snow, braving the cold. Suddenly she prayed the rosary louder and faster. She left the garden and knelt twice on the road, then again at the spring where she prayed and wept, "because she left too quickly." Mary told her "My dear child, pray hard."
Mariette waited ten days before seeing the Virgin for the last time. She appeared on Thursday, March 2nd. Torrential rain had been pouring down since three p.m. Mariette went out, it was 7. pm. She was reciting her third rosary when the rain suddenly stopped. She remained silent, stretched out her arms, got up, took a step forward and knelt down. At home, Mariette revealed the message entrusted to her by Mary. "I am the Mother of the Saviour Mother of God. Pray a lot." The Virgin then laid her hands on her and said : "Adieu."
Mariette Beco deceased
In the morning of Friday 2nd December, Mariette Beco, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared eight times from the 15th of January to the 2nd of March 1933, died, aged 90, in an old people’s home at Banneux.
The news of her death was soon spread among pilgrims, arousing a vivid emotion.
Mariette’s last years were those of most elderly persons with both joys and sufferings. The Rector of the Shrine of Banneux, Father Leo Palm, had several encounters with Mariette. He remembers her as a person loved by her family and attached to her son and her grand-children. Mariette also mourned her two daughters, one who died on her prime childhoud, the second who died in 2008, aged 61.
The Apparitions of Banneux were officially recognized by the Church in 1949 by Mgr Kerkhofs, bishop of Liege. During his visit to Banneux, Pope John Paul II had an encounter with Mariette Beco.
In 2008, the year of the official ceremonies of the 75th anniversary of the Apparitions, Mariette Beco requested Father Joseph Cassart, then Rector of the Shrine to merely make known a letter in which she made her last statement about the Apparitions: “I was no more then a postman who delivers the mail. Once this has been done, the postman is of no importance any more”.
Just like his predecessors Mgr Aloys Jousten, present-day bishop of Liege, solemnly reaffirmed the authentic character of the Apparitions in remembrance of the official recognition 60 years before, in 2009.
All through her life, Mariette proved to be perfectly discreet. She came to the spring and to the little Chapel of the Apparitions as unnoticed as best she could, praying to the Virgin Mary whom she has now set off to see again forever.
